The Alabama Department of Insurance Fraud Bureau announces the arrest of Lemeka S. Pate, 32, of Andalusia. Pate was arrested on July 24 and charged with first-degree theft. Pate was transported to the Covington County jail, where she was booked and charged. Bond was set at $20,000. A charge of first-degree theft is a class B felony, with the possibility of up to 20 years in prison.
The arrest warrant was issued after an investigation by the Fraud Bureau, which received a complaint in May 2018. The complaint stated that an elderly couple lost more than $60,000 from their annuity investment accounts by use of deception. Investigators determined Pate got the money after telling the couple a series of hardship stories and asking them for help.
