A Sunday night fire resulted in the loss of one life in Union Springs.  The fire at 304 Locke Avenue, involving a wood frame dwelling connected to a store, was reported at 9:18 PM.

Flora Bell Carter, age 91, died in the fire which apparently began in the immediate vicinity of a non-vented natural gas space heater.  Mrs. Carter was known to sit in a chair within inches of the heater.  Her husband was in the store when he heard his wife calling for help, however, he was unable to reach her due to smoke from the fire.

The fire and death remain under investigation by the Union Springs Fire and Police Departments, Bullock County Coroner and the Alabama State Fire Marshals Office.
