Two Selma children died this morning during a fire at their mobile home.  The children’s mother was severely injured attempting to rescue the children.  One adult and two other children escaped the burning home uninjured.

Shannon Williams age 8 and Lamaron Williams age 5 were killed during the fire at Hidden Acres Mobile Home Community located at 4915 U. S. Highway 80 East Lot 11-A.  Shawnia Williams age 24 is in critical condition at University of Alabama Birmingham Burn Center with burns to 67% of her body.

The fire was reported at 12:47, AM after discovery by occupants of the two bedroom single wide mobile home.  Selma Fire Department and Craig Field Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call.

The home was equipped with one battery powered smoke detector which was last known to be tested on November 1, 2002.  At that time the smoke detector was operable.

Investigation of the fire by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, the two fire departments and the Alabama State Fire Marshals Office revealed the fire originated in one of the bedrooms.  The cause of the fire appears to be combustibles too close to an electric space heater.
