Michael A. Bownes, General Counsel for the Alabama Department of Insurance, has been awarded the 2003 Paul L. DeAngelo Memorial Teaching Award, which is given annually by the Insurance Regulatory Examiners Society.

The DeAngelo Memorial Teaching Award is given as recognition of excellence in insurance education. It honors current or former regulators who have committed themselves to increasing and improving insurance regulator knowledge and through excellence in educating regulators, industry and the public. It is named in memory of Paul L. DeAngelo, a former New Jersey regulator who passed away in 2000 while returning home from an IRES seminar at which he taught.

"We're proud of Mike and the work he has done for the Alabama Department of Insurance," Commissioner Walter A. Bell said. "I am pleased, but I'm not surprised given the caliber of person he is and the caliber of the work he has done."

Bownes, a native of Cullman, is a graduate of the University of Alabama and the Cumberland School of Law.  He has served as General Counsel for the Alabama Department of Insurance for 14 years and has been an Assistant Attorney General for 20 years.
