The Wednesday afternoon fire at First Baptist Church occurred when a church staff member turned on lights in the church sanctuary, not realizing combustibles had been placed too close to some lights.
The church sanctuary was under renovation and asbestos was being removed by workmen. Toward the end of the day, workmen placed combustibles immediately adjacent to some light fixtures. When the staff member went in and turned on lights for the Wednesday evening service, the combustibles became too hot and ignited.
