Independent Adjuster Requirements

An "independent adjuster" is a person who, for compensation as an independent contractor or as an employee of an independent contractor, undertakes on behalf of an insurer to ascertain and determine the amount of any claim, loss, or damage payable under a contract of property, casualty, or workers' compensation insurance or to effect settlement of such claim, loss, or damage. Ala. Code § 27-9A-3.

EXEMPTIONS ~ THOSE WHO DO NOT REQUIRE AN INDEPENDENT ADJUSTER LICENSE



Qualifications to be licensed

Individuals must be

  • 18 years of age or more.
  • Alabama Residents or those using Alabama as a Designated Home State License (see listing below). These individuals must complete both the Alabama Prelicensing Course and State Exam.

      Effective 1-1-2015:
      Any non-resident individual choosing Alabama as their Designated Home State for the Independent Adjuster license must take the appropriate prelicensing course and pass the appropriate Alabama Adjuster exam and complete the fingerprinting requirements.



      These states do NOT license Independent Adjusters

      CO, DC, IA, IL, KS, MA, MD, MO, ND, NE, NJ, OH, PA, SD, TN, VA, and WI

      NOTE: Cannot use AL as a designated home state unless applicant is from a nonlicensing state and has passed AL exam.

      PLEASE NOTE: Effective 9-8-2014:
      Residents from California, Hawaii and New York applying for a Non-Resident Independent Adjuster license must take the appropriate prelicensing course and pass the Alabama exam based upon their respective states requiring our residents to take an exam under NAIC Reciprocity.

Individual adjusters renew their license biennially based on their BIRTH MONTH whether the individual was born in an EVEN or ODD year.
